And uh...you should've...uh...seen our 100 guitar symphony. It was wicked. Or even better, you should've been in it...um...cause it's not that hard to read sheet music if you try. You just gotta try and not be a pussy like all of our other St. Louis friends. Um...and uh...there was totally room to freak out at the end. Like, Glenn Branca found whatever sort of musical terms you have to put it into to get everyone to freak out, and uh...so we did, and I knocked all my sheet music on the floor and used the music stand as a slide and banged my guitar into it. And Erik dropped his pic, so he played guitar with his bare hand...with his bear claw...hand. Um...(sighs)...pussy! Here's Erik.

Erik: Hey, dude. So, uh, it was a hundred guitar symphony, there were only 6 girls, everyone else was dudes...so it was a total sausage fest....and yeah...so you would've loved it. A lot of the people were pretty lame. And a lot of them had totally...totally hideous, ridiculous guitars. Some of them were like 50, and uh...one of the guys wore like a fucking civil war reenactor's hat the entire time, even when we played the show. And um...yeah...so pretty much all we've been doing the last three days is playing experimental guitar. And uh...we ate Lebanese food, so I have a pretty good idea of what Luke's gonna have for Thanksgiving dinner. And it's 4:20. And it's kinda sad that you didn't pick up the phone. we've been so productive here. whether it's trolling around trying to find free drinks or sipping on forties in the park or sharing sparks and corona *light* on the train, we've gotten a lot accomplished. like when luke and i ate $2 falafel sandwiches and $1 slices for lunch the other day, that's a cheap meal! drinking wine in central park, meeting hotties, seeing old friends, making new ones. we'll be home in a week. iggy, lez do that shit!

yesterday morning i had a dream in which i went to an exchange student's house to find cats dressed up meditating in bathtubs. one of the cats tried to escape from the bathroom when i opened the door and i thought that would probably get me in trouble, so i tried to stop it and it bit me. then my mom was knocking on the front door. this morning i first had dreams about being by myself in my mom's old house, and some bullies from middle school broke in and tried to fuck me up. i ran out of the house and over to the next block and jumped through a window outside someone's backyard. the man inside let me seek refuge after i explained they were going to try and kill me.

Today, Drew and our guru Jon and I made the trip to Topeka to check out a sweet 15-passenger van with purple finish. Apparently, it hadn't moved from the back alley it sat in for 2 years. We cleared out some of the cobwebs and jumped the battery, and she started right up, so we drove her around the block. If the stars align accordingly, we may be spending many of our future hours in that big purple shuttle.

Right now I'm really hungry and I'm watching Dateline NBC and it's pretty much drama news hour.

We did a lot of bumping and grinding last night at the Replay. We also met this mystical punk diva shaman drifter-type dude. His hair was mesmerizing, as was his caterwauling performance. He leapt from table to table on the Replay patio and swung from the rafters. I can't remember his name for sure, but he's the leader of some cult called SSION. Apparently, this is what he looks like when not in disguise:

Our full length record is almost done. We have been working on it for quite some time now. We are going to begin working on artwork soon, which we are all excited about, I think we're going to try to have all of that completed before the end of April.
Barrett and I are going to be playing music on the patio of the Replay Lounge Saturday, April 5th, so come and chump thump with us. We also have a one-off scheduled at the Empty Bottle in Chicago on Sunday, April 13.

Souvlaki

For me, Souvlaki by Slowdive is one of the saddest albums of all time. Most likely it's a combination of the music itself as well as the events surrounding the period of my life during which I fell in love with Slowdive and this album. Either way, the first notes of "Alison" still make me feel this unexpected chilly loneliness of summer days spent in emotional collapse, convinced everything had fallen apart. I remember being drunk in the dark, alone, and listening to "Dagger," writing forlorn emails and pointed declarations about my misery and why nothing would ever be the same. Pretty intense shit that I wouldn't want to relive, but for a long time, this album felt like all I could bear to listen to most days. The shimmering, hazy textures of Souvlaki unveil pop songs buried beneath layers of ambience, and it makes sense that Brian Eno co-wrote/produced two of the tracks on the album.

In the reissue's liner notes, the band talks about how some of the album centered around the breakup of singer/guitar player Neil Halstead and guitarist/singer Rachel Goswell. Apparently, Neil took refuge in a Welsh cottage during the summer of 1992, holing up to write various songs (such as "Dagger") that would later appear on the album. Rachel also notes that much of the album's sound emerged from the band overdubbing and experimenting with different sounds while hanging out in the studio and getting stoned, some songs even ending up with 20 some tracks of guitar. Sounds like our recording process, not that we've come up with anything as great as Souvlaki, no matter how stoned.

I remember one late night of particular emotional vulnerability, drunk and stoned, having to DJ my show on the radio station at 4 AM and throwing on "Souvlaki Space Station" and letting it play into "When the Sun Hits." To me, these songs are the perfect centerpiece, the former being completely hazy, fucked up, lonely wandering through the town on some drunken night, visiting the usual haunts, visibly cracking as everything passes before one's self as a dark blur. The latter is waking up the next morning alone to find a new day has come, vaguely trying to recollect the previous night's embarrassments, leaving one thinking, "It matters where you are..."

Taken after our show at the Eighth St. Taproom for Jayplay (it's like People magazine for the University of Kansas). We're on the cover................and?

Well, it's been a relatively exciting and emotionally exhausting (only because we drink too much) week. Last Thursday night, we played at the Eighth St. Taproom with UMBROS, and it was kind of a strange night. Everyone's minds seemed to be elsewhere throughout the performances. It was fun nonetheless to get shitfaced with our homeslices from Columbia and our other regular mainstays/drinking buddies/co-conspirators. The show was sort of the culmination of a story about us and other local musicians published today in the Jayplay, the KU news magazine. If you're on campus, pick up the magazine to see all of our names spelled wrong in the article and to gaze upon Derek plunking out some sick bass atop Brock's shoulders on the motherfucking cover. After the show, we all retreated to Space Camp, and the rest gets really hazy, mostly as a result of all the Natural Light that showed up. And the tequila shots after everyone was already sufficiently wasted. In the morning, I woke up in Dane's bed. People were passed out everywhere, and there was a half-eaten cheeseburger on the ground. I had to drive Gauraz (sic) to the bus stop half-wasted still, with only these semi-broken sunglasses I found shielding my bloodshot eyes from the harsh sunlight. When I returned to Space Camp, I heard some mysterious recorder being played by some unseen person in a nearby backyard. I found this hilarious and passed out in Iggy's bed (who was in Chicago) for an indeterminate amount of time, still able to hear the recorder from outside. The only other interesting thing that happened all weekend was when Dane shotgunned a beer in this frontyard Sunday morning around 4 am and barfed it up immediately afterwards.

Sunday night Luke, Drew, Derek, Lisa and I played a Baby Birds show at the Taproom. After the weekend off from work and drinking myself into a stupor three or four straight nights, I awoke around 1 pm on Sunday and decided to go to Baby Birds practice for that evening's show. I promised myself I wouldn't drink that night, but predictably we all ended up getting super wastey wasted, like, hanging out with the bartender and doing shots until nearly closing time.

Monday night was a temporary recovery period, and then Tuesday, Boo and Boo Too played some strange benefit show at the Jackpot. We played with a few bands I didn't really pay attention to, as well as the Snuggle Bugs, who were fun and made me laugh. We hung out with Jenna most of the night and briefly with Ilenia and the Umbros, who were back in town for the evening. I was feeling especially panicky, and my interactions with everyone were generally pretty awkward, probably because I had decided it would be a good idea to take a bunch of bong rips right before venturing to the Jackpot, and then there were all these hardcore kids hanging out there from the early show. Tuesday was the first show Luke has played with us since September, and for various reasons, it was one of my favorite sets we've played in a while. We didn't have the chance to practice for the show in light of receiving a noise complaint last week thanks to our bitchy fucking neighbors, so instead we just had a pre-show conference in the back alley. I went on a buzzed rambling about how this show needed to be all about letting Boo and Boo Too begin to heal as a consummate entity, which just might have worked as the set seemed to abound with positive or at least content vibes. Saturday we are playing a show at the Duke here in Lawrence on Elm Street. I hope Freddy Krueger comes and chops my head off.

I hate Mondays

The new Breeders album Mountain Battles leaked on the internetz, and it's all we've been listening to pretty much all weekend. FUCK! YES! We love Kim Deal and her sister Kelley. I really hate Mondays because Sundays are my only days off and today means I go back to work everyday until Saturday. Oh, shit! The Black Lips show is tonight. I'm soooooo excited for this show. I love the Black Lips.

This week our most righteous bros are coming back in town to play a show with us Thursday night at the Taproom. We're going to have a live video feed of the show streaming so Jenna can watch while she's in Chicago and just cry. OK, not really. Shit, we need to practice.

The Family Gets Together For Some Group Photos

A couple of weeks ago we all got together at the Gloomplex to take some new band pictures, which really just turned into (or, always was) an excuse for us to drink a shit load of tall boys. I mean, we HAD to have tons of beer cans in the pictures. So after we gathered with our closest associates we commenced drinking a lot of beer. It was fun and enlightening in terms of how much of a family we BABY BOOS are.

We still are not quite finished with our first full-length No Tempo, but we should still hopefully have it done and ready to come out by the summer. I'm already busy daydreaming about what we'll record next. There was a major lapse of dead time during the fall where it seemed like we would never work out a new song again, like maybe we had done what we did and that was that. These ten songs we've been compiling over the past year for our first album I think really drained a lot from us, in a good way. It made it hard to imagine what could possibly come next. But lately, new songs have been pouring out of us at an unprecedented rate. I just want to get this record done and start working on a new one.

BBDDM are busy recording this week. I am super duper fucking stoned/stoked to hear what they come up with.

Actually, I guess there aren't that many beer containers in those pictures. I guess we kind of fell short of our ideal--us shitfaced and surrounded by wasteful excess. Originally, our idea was for the photos to be centered around us in the middle of an intense game of Circle of Death, as you can kind of deduce from above... I assure you we WERE extra wastey though...I promise.

i am just sitting at work very hungry and have discovered that yello sub does not accept credit cards over the phone. this is very distressing to me as i am very hungry and would like to eat a yello sub sandwich immediately. fuck.

today i have listened to: sonic youth, wire, mazzy star, M.I.A., DNA, sigur ros, sunset rubdown, elliott smith, the fall, no age, animal collective, and the stooges. i started listening to this live velvet underground album on the drive to work. i have to say their live r&b rendition of "i'm waiting for the man" is no match for the velvet underground & nico version.

last night i listened to "lift yr skinny fists like antennas to heaven!" for the first time in a long time, and i had forgotten how incredible that album is. one of my favorite of all time. i was discussing with CHOMP WOMP about how i would like to play a song that has a slow-burn-jam antennas to heaven feel during the first half and later shifts to a noisy punk stomp, "eliminator jr." esque.

at the beginning of "red red wine" off of pleased to meet me by the replacements, there is a skronk of feedback that sounds pretty much identical to allen's little amplified box of screech. we'll all be able to hear a lot more of its screechings on our upcoming alBUM.

the other night i began watching the film "withnail and i," which i thought was amazing. it's about two unemployed english actor drunks escaping the city after their anxieties begin to peak. they hole up in withnail's uncle's countryside cabin, swimming in more booze and wine, paranoid when uncle monte breaks in during the night that someone is out to kill them. that's about as far as we got, as those i watched the movie with kept exclaiming things like, "WHAT IS THE PREMISE OF THIS MOVIE?!?!" i need to watch the rest of that.

i also watched "vacation" recently after a hot summer midday swim. it was funny at parts but also turned out to be kind of a shitty movie. i almost feel asleep as a result of much hash and weed. but chevy chase was kind of hot.

I can't believe we forgot to include Hillary in our tour thanks. She was sort of like the founder of the feast for the whole tour. Thanks to her we ate so many delicious, delicious meals of those little flavored crackers that come in packages of six. David and Erica too, for weed and stencils.

This weekend we are playing with WEATHER IS HAPPENING at the Jackpot in Lawrence on Saturday and with VIDEOHIPPOS and LIZZ KING at the 8th Street Taproom on Monday. Weather is Happening are two guys from the now defunct Ricky Fitts from Wichita and a drummer. They are fucking awesome, really reverbed out screamy vocals with twin sick noisy deafening guitars, on top of sort of new wave beats (they started out using a drum machine instead of a live drummer, apparently now they incorporate both). Videohippos are part of the WHAM CITY Baltimore collective, and I recently saw them open for Dan Deacon in Lawrence. The force with which their drummer hits his kit sort of reminds me of the way Brian Chippendale from Lightning Bolt plays the drums...except Videohippos play fuzzed out, dreamy pop songs. We saw Lizz King play in an alleyway in Baltimore recently, and she was temporarily crippled, hopping around, alternating between guitar, keyboard, and other shit. It was bizarre and awesome. Come to these shows.

I am listening to the Smiths "Unlovable" and it reminds me of Katie V. The first BRAMBLE THRASH song began to reveal itself last night to those involved. More on that soon...

Day 19- Memphis, Tennessee- The Rally Point

Day 18- Atlanta, Georgia- Teahouse

Our show was supposed to be @ ISP, but the collective who ran the venue were nowhere to be found. The guys who we played with were on their toes and hooked us up with a last minute show @ a very rad place. This show turned out better than the ISP would have anyhow. Great big thanks to Waylon and Aaron from Club of Rome for letting us crash @ the crackhouse in addition to Penny for letting us play Teahouse. Club of Rome and Gold Painted Nails melt faces. Day 16- Baltimore, Maryland- Whartscape/ Ottobar (Day off)

This had to have been the most scenic drive on this tour.
Old Town Alexandria is a quaint little town which definetely made me miss our band's burrow in Lawrence.
We split up on our way to Whartscape in Baltimore, a three day festival curated by Dan Deacon/ Wham City (100+ person art collective). Barrett and I tagged along with Britt and Jane while the rest of the crew hauled the jeep. We saw so many bands!
Beach House and Blood Baby were my favorites.
At around mid-afternoon, I walked five blocks to catch Deerhunter's soundcheck at the Ottobar.
Thanks to Deerhunter and their tour manager, we managed to get to watch them and Battles free of charge.
We drove back to The One Room Room and slept almost too well.

The drive to philly from nyc was easy.
Two hours, and a pizza hut personal pan + breadsticks later, we reached our destination.
Thank god for the camel representatives in our country because we were bestowed with six packs total. If I remember correctly, last night we played with Univox, Photograph of the Back of My Head, and The Major Leagues. Thanks to Party Steve for taking us swimming at a public pool, and to his roommates for letting us stay at their place.
Allen received some found glasses today.

Us kids spotted James Iha walking right past us on Ludlow st. where the cake shop is located. On our way to Kim's, Amedeo Pace from Blonde Redhead crossed our path with his dog. It is a very small world. If that isn't enough, I recognized our soundguy Nadav at cake shop from lawrence city zoo, his band Aa played the first show there earlier this year. Lucky bastard got to play with 76 other drummers in for the Boredoms drum ensemble. By tomorrow, both Cake Shop and Kim's will have our EP for sale in store. A big thanks to Jack, Allen's friend, for letting us all stay at his badass manhattan abode right underneath the bklyn bridge. Two more days in this city and we may never come back...

Day 10- Manhattan, NY- Cake Shop

Early, early this morning we made the grueling trek from Columbus, OH to NYC. After playing to about 5 people last night at Cafe Bourbon Street and making $zerrrrrrrrro, everyone was in pretty poor spirits about driving 10 hours through the night to New York and being broke as fuck. Luckily after some intense driving by Luke and spotting by Allen, we awoke to a somewhat renewed morale in the mountainy lands of Pennsylvania. Once Derek took over on driving and we reached the city, enthusiasm began to replace our bummed out lethargy.

After making our way to the Cake Shop and snagging a gem of a parking spot on the street across from the venue (parallel parking a Jeep Cherokee with a trailer hitched to it on a one way street in New York City is not fun...), we grabbed some cheap and very delicious Indian food before wandering around the Soho/East Village area and hitting up Kim's record and video shop. To unload we parked illegally in front of a fire hydrant across from the Cake Shop, and we were forced to wait for the Chrysler parked in front of us to move so we could pull up and grab a legitimate curbside parking space so as not to get towed/ticketed. The middle-aged couple in the Chrysler literally sat in the car with the engine running for at least an hour eating food and looking over their new purchases (the dude in the driver's seat seriously kept trying on these cowboy/sun hats while they were sitting there), while we were obviously waiting for them to leave. It was amusing/really fucking annoying.

The Cake Shop is a pretty rad coffee & snack shop with a bar and stage in the basement. Suprisingly clean too for a somewhat dingy basement. Hopefully, the show will be wild tonight, but we're all still a little tired from the Pitchfork===>Columbus===>NYC voyage. More photos soon.

Pre-Show Bull$hit in Columbus, OH

I am currently seated in Kafe Kerouac in Columbus, OH sipping green tea, waiting to go back to Cafe Bourbon Street (a dirty, greasy bar that rivals the Replay Lounge in the gnarly factor -- reminds us of home, I love the Replay!). Unfortunately, the touring life has begun to get the best of me, and I'm nursing the beginning symptoms of a chest cold. The day before our extended New York stint. Fuck! Total bummer. But I did drink two XXX Vitamin Waters today, so let's hope that shit is worth the 3 bucks.

Tour highlight so far: trek back to Chicago for Pitchfork's Spiderland / Liquid Swords / Daydream Nation extravaganza. The Youth fucking killed it. One of the most intense sets I've ever seen. After freaking out to Daydream Nation live on acid, we sat around in an alley trying to figure out what to do with ourselves for an hour or so. Eventually, we made the confusing journey back to Wicker Park so we could stash our vehicle and trailer in a quasi-safe spot and headed to the Chicago kids' place. Extra special thanks for putting us up for two nights. These kids rule.

Day 8- Chicago, Illinois- p4k music festival

We left Cleveland Heights at around 1 and got into Chicago with rachel her friend franchesco at about 7 pm. Slint's set was supposed to start at 7, but was pushed back to 6:30. Halfway through their set, I'm pretty sure we all started feeling the altoid/sweet tart sunshine. Slint and GZA were mediocre but Sonic Youth redeemed the whole night by playing daydream nation in its entirety. Allen lost his newish glasses during the show while losing his mind with the rest in the pit. Derek found them after the show minus a lens which means that now we only have three people who can drive, instead of four. We somehow found a place to park and managed to walk back to Gina's house for the night. I don't think any of us slept really well. Oh yeah, during sonic youth's set, i spotted trevor de brauw from pelican and derek saw chris taylor from grizzly bear.

Day 7- Akron, Ohio- The Lime Spider

Yesterday was our longest drive on the tour. We are trying our best to ration snack foods, money, frankincense, and cigarettes. We got into Akron after a six hour drive from Bloomington and loaded in shortly thereafter. We played to less than twenty people, but the sound was decent and the venue fed us veggie burgers and potato chips in addition to giving us a percentage of the bar- so we made out alright. After the show, we had a semi-inebriated photo op outside the venue involving Derek lighting a painted sun on fire and then drove a half an hour to Rachel’s house in Cleveland Heights where we all crashed.

Day 6- Bloomington, Indiana- Uncle Fester's House of Blooze

Our show here was supposed to be at bear’s place but we found out that it got moved to uncle fester’s a few days ago. We were kind of wary of the show because we heard that the place was a frat bar known for live reggae music. We completely forgot to account for the time zone change, so we frantically tried to get a hold of the promoter/venue but local 411 didn’t have the number for the venue. As it turned out, both touring bands on the bill showed up to the venue before it was even open. We killed time prior to load-in by making more t-shirts and freeing our very own aquatic blossoms at uncle d’s pizzeria. Bars in Bloomington stay open until three, so we didn’t start playing until around midnight. We lucked out and ended up sleeping on comfortable carpeting at laura’s house. She made us some pasta, and we all devoured it while watching allen play the ps2 game katamari damacy. After barrett, derek, and luke passed out, allen and i watched fox and the hound until we fell asleep.

Day 5- Chicago, Illinois- The Note

Besides having to park in a semi-flooded lot in addition to barrett's parents camera falling into the dirty water, chicago was great.
We ate some cheap and tasty mediterranean food in wicker park and then went to the venue to soundcheck.
The sound quality on and off the stage was definetely above par.
We played with Them, Roaring Twenties and The Prids.
Thanks to Gabe and Gina for letting us sleep on their floor and couch.

Day 4- Iowa City, Iowa- The Picador

The drive from omaha to iowa city was short as hell, but long as fuck.
Sitting bitch between (o/a--barrett) and no-smoking sums my experience up fairly accurately.
I didn't sleep at in the jeep, but the lovesac @ ian's last night made up for it 100%.

Tonight we played with our favorite iowa citians- rusty buckets; this is the second consecutive iowa city show with these duders. The last time we played with them the picador was gabe's oasis. No problem our non-21'r front:
$1 beers + half off drinks :. happy us.
Apparently our buddy drewmgibson (baby birds don't drink milk, don't ride your elephant to school, darling at sea) has created a band with eric 'chippendale' ratzel (ex-boo milk hotel too, brian). Look, they have a myspace and they're playing @ the embassy in kc on july 25: videos and songs for your aural and viewing pleasure.

BRIAN (lawrence,ks music and literature collective) were scheduled for an impromptu performance behind arizona trading company early thursday evening but were forced to cancel due to tachycardia and other unforseeable circumstances. Unfortunately, a couple of us have been appointed (self-appointed) to drive back to lawrence tomorrow morning to retrieve guitars, amps, and replace bass tubes from BRIAN's locked practice shed/abode.
